You prepare mentally for your appointment, but freeze when you get there.
The doctor or NP asks, "Any questions?" and your mind goes completely blank
You walk out remembering everything you should have said
You spend the drive home frustrated that you didn't advocate for yourself
An easy to follow systematic approach that works for any doctor, any NP, any appointment, any situation
For example, instead of freezing when asked if you have questions, you'll say:
"The main thing I want to make sure we cover today is [your top concern].
Can we start there?"

Thank you Joyce!
This is a keeper.
For me, the last step was the Aha moment. I tend to rush out of the practice instead of immediately pondering the learnings of the visit taking the time to tie up all the loose ends. Nobody (but Joyce) is telling us that it is OK AFTER the visit to sit in that waiting room and take a few moments to reflect on our health action plan.
This could be the difference between walking out of there with our heads spinning or walking out of there feeling in control. Love it!

Thanks for the checklist, Joyce!
Can't tell you how many times I have walked
in or out of a medical appointment with a vague feeling that it could have been a better use of
time for both me and my health care provider.
Now, I have a tool to help me change that.
